In Singapore, approximately 13,000 trees will be cut down for urban development over the next 13 years.

To make up for this, saplings are planted. But the original trees often don’t get transplanted, since uprooting them properly costs more (and is more difficult) than simply cutting them down.

This results in a massive stockpile of logs in several sawmills. When we last visited, we saw piles of logs as wide and deep as an Olympic-sized swimming pool. And there wasn’t just one pile.
These logs are abandoned and left to rot. Or, they get sent to the wood-chipper to be turned straight into wood chips.

We think these trees deserve better than this. We wanted to restore the aesthetic pleasure that these trees once gave. So, The Local Tree Project was born.
